APEL.C Malaysia: Recognising Prior Learning for Course Credit

Learn how documented learning from work and training may be assessed against specific course outcomes.

Reviewed: 19 October 2026Based on official MQA resources

The essential answer

APEL.C evaluates prior learning for possible credit award in courses within a programme. It is not a separate admission route or an automatic exemption based on job experience.

Who can apply?

MQA states that APEL.C applicants must already be registered students at an institution approved to conduct APEL.C. The route is open to eligible local and international students without a minimum age requirement.

What might the assessment involve?

Depending on the course, evidence may be assessed through a portfolio, challenge test, demonstration, interview or other approved methods. Students must demonstrate learning that matches specific course outcomes.

How much credit can be awarded?

MQA’s current FAQ describes a maximum of 60% credit from non-formal and informal learning through APEL.C, with an overall maximum of 70% when combined with qualifying formal learning credit transfer. The exact rules and eligible courses must be checked with the institution; these are limits, not automatic awards.

How to prepare

Check that you are registered in the programme; ask whether your institution is approved for APEL.C; identify relevant courses; map your learning to their outcomes; and follow the institution’s formal assessment procedure.
